The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) is Australia’s national security intelligence service. It exists to protect Australia, its people and its interests from serious threats to security. These include terrorism, espionage, people smuggling, and interference by foreign governments in Australia’s affairs.
ASIO’s work is anticipatory. It seeks to identify, investigate and assess potential security threats and to work with national and international security partners to prevent harm from occurring.
ASIO operates within a robust legal framework and is accountable to several oversight bodies. It does not have the authority to arrest and prosecute people. Instead, it focuses on providing advice to the Australian Government, government agencies and industry about threats to security.
Many ASIO investigations begin with useful information being provided to the Organisation by members of the public who become aware of something concerning or suspicious.
ASIO continues to welcome information from all members of the Australian community. If you know of something that could harm Australia’s security, please contact ASIO. You can do so by calling the Central Office switchboard on 1800 020 648 (toll free) or the ASIO office in the capital city you live by calling 13 ASIO (13-27-46).
The person who answers this call will do so in English. If you do not speak English, we suggest you obtain help from a trusted friend or family member. If ASIO requires further information, interpreting services can be arranged. Any information you provide to ASIO will be held in strict confidentiality.
