Tech FAQ

Q. Can you tell me a little about the tech stacks at ASIO?

A. Given the depth of roles and technologies within the Organisation, this is equally a matter of pragmatism as it is a matter of security. The role description for each vacancy though will speak to the technology and associated skillsets required. There will also be a contact officer listed for most vacancies – don’t hesitate to speak with them.


Q. Are most of your tech jobs operational?

A. While it's true we have both enterprise and operational tech roles in ASIO we are essentially "one-team" here. This means that we value tech roles equally and recognise the critical interplay between them. Out career paths also provide opportunity, over time, to work between both if that's what you'd like. 


Q. Where will I be located?

A. While the majority of our staff are based in Canberra, we have requirements across all capital cities. The specific vacancy you apply for will list the location of the role.  


Q. Is ASIO a particularly hierarchical workplace?

A. While we’re a Commonwealth Government entity, our work is not focussed around rigid structures. Instead it is as much about the way things are done. In the tech space it’s therefore not uncommon for us to apply flat working structures in ensuring the right outcome is reached.


Q. Are techs expected to wear a suit and tie to work every day?

A. No. Your skills and your contribution are more important to us. (But if you want to suit up, you can!)


Q. How will you contact and update me on my application?

A. For tech recruitment we unsurprisingly use a variety of technology to (discretely) communicate with you. This may be across mobile and internet-enabled platforms and may incorporate third party commercial entities. If ever in doubt you can always contact us directly on (02)6234 1133.


Q. What are you looking for in a successful applicant? What can I do to make my application stand out?

A. We are looking for those that value continual learning and who can work in dynamic and collaborative tech environments. We want to get a strong insight into you and your passion for tech (be it personal and/or professional). We value life skills and abilities as much as we do formal quals. It’s as much attitude as it is aptitude for us. 


Q. If I’m unsuccessful, can I re-apply for other future roles?

A. Absolutely you can.

(Please be aware though that the nature of our business means we can’t share the specific details on why you were unsuccessful in a role.)


Q. Am I allowed to speak to anyone (family, friends, etc) about my application?

A. ASIO holds all applications in the strictest of confidence and we need you to do the same. This helps both us and you. Once you’re employed with us you’ll need to exercise this level of care to maintain your security clearance. And once you’re used to it, it’s not too hard to maintain.


Q. Do I have to be an Australian citizen at time of application?

A. Yes – we can’t progress your application otherwise.
