Minister's Guidelines

Under section 8A(1) and (2) of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979, the Minister for Home Affairs may give the Director-General of Security written guidelines to be observed by ASIO in performance of its functions and the exercise of its powers.

The Minister’s Guidelines set out the principles ASIO is required to observe in order to meet the public’s expectations in performing its functions, including obtaining, correlating and evaluating intelligence relevant to security, and the interpretation of politically motivated violence.

The Guidelines are a critical component of the accountability framework that is designed to ensure ASIO acts with legality and propriety.
