Graduate Careers

Graduates usually come into ASIO through the intelligence professional stream or the Technical Intelligence Graduate program. Working at ASIO allows you to feel like you are contributing to something bigger than yourself and making a real difference to the country in a way that most other graduate programs may not.

Intelligence professional stream

All intelligence professional trainees who enter ASIO embark on a 12-month training program to teach them everything they need to know to work in intelligence. During the first nine months, they attend classes and work-based training in Canberra, and in the final three months, they participate in a structured workplace program. Our training programs are carefully designed to equip trainees with the skills and knowledge they need to become successful Intelligence Officers and/or Intelligence Analysts.

These programs introduce intelligence professional trainees to the concepts, methodologies and technical tools used in intelligence work. Trainees learn new skills, including critical thinking and information communications technology, and are provided regular feedback on performance, confidence, self-reliance and flexibility to build key technical and professional abilities.

Once training is complete, trainees graduate as either an Intelligence Analyst or Intelligence Officer and are expected to be mobile throughout their careers (for Intelligence Officers, this can include postings to ASIO state offices).

Technical Intelligence Graduate program

The Technical Intelligence Graduate program gives you the opportunity to experience everything ASIO has to offer, with several rotations throughout the Organisation’s different technical areas. Each rotation will involve something new and exciting and, although much of it will be unfamiliar, our teams will provide you with all the support and guidance you need. As a graduate technical officer, you will be matched with a senior officer who will act as your mentor throughout the program to help and advise you on all aspects of your professional life. This program presents a unique opportunity to understand ASIO as a whole and includes a range of interesting training and courses.

A degree in mathematics, computing and similar disciplines is a strong foundation for other useful skills, and you will be using your problem-solving and programming skills on a daily basis throughout the program.
