ASIO counters threats through the dedication of our staff—ordinary people who do extraordinary things—and our strong partnerships with law enforcement and national security agencies, governments, industry, academia and our international counterparts.

The Director-General of Security ensures that ASIO continues to meet the expectations of the Australian people, the government, our stakeholders and our partners. He is committed to being as open as he can about ASIO’s work while safeguarding what needs to be protected. While the security challenges facing our country are significant, ASIO remains determined to secure Australia and its people.

Community

We are extremely dedicated to our work, but that doesn’t mean it’s all we do. Our people are from all walks of life, and their passions outside of the workplace reflect this.

Many of us volunteer for a wide range of charities and community groups—from rural fire brigades and volunteer emergency organisations, to groups promoting women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths (STEM) and mental health initiatives. ASIO provides paid community service leave to support officers volunteering their time to the community. We also give back to the community by hosting several fundraising events each year.

Diversity and inclusion

We seek to reflect the community we protect, and our staff-led diversity networks form an essential part of creating a diverse and inclusive culture.

In 2019 and 2020 ASIO received silver level accreditation as an employer of choice at the Australian LGBTQ Inclusion Awards, which celebrates Australia's top organisations for LGBTQ inclusion.

Male Champions of Change

In 2019 the Director-General of Security, Mike Burgess, joined the Male Champions of Change program to advance diversity in ASIO. The Male Champions of Change goal is to create groups of influential men who work together to advance gender equity in their organisations and across society more broadly. Its strategy enables men to step up beside women and accept joint accountability for change.

Guest speakers

ASIO hosts a range of visitors to speak to us on topics such as innovation, diversity and inclusion, and leadership. We recognise that having a healthy career is more than just having access to workplace development and includes access to diverse experiences and opportunities. We host presentations by, and discussions with, dignitaries, respected academics and specialists—people who educate us, inspire us, challenge us and offer us a range of perspectives.
