ASIO's Work

Compared to many other countries, Australia faces a lower overall level of security threat. This is largely due to our political, social and economic systems, and Australia's clear borders. But that does not mean that Australia has been free from acts of espionage, foreign interference, terrorism and other political violence. Nor does it provide a guarantee for the future. ASIO's role is to ensure that the government knows not only about current threats, but also has forewarning of emerging threats.

Most security threats facing Australia have their origins overseas. They include the efforts of foreign governments to use clandestine or deceptive means to further their goals in Australia, and politically motivated violence arising from overseas conflicts.
