Eligibility and Why ASIO?
The lifestyle of an ASIO officer is not for everyone. The recruitment process is demanding and upon commencement, the lifestyle changes can be significant. However, it is worth it!

The tasks you do may be similar to that of other organisations, but ASIO’s subject matter and objective is unlike any other. However, you must consider the following before submitting an application:
- Australian citizenship. You must be an Australian citizen. Your application will not be progressed if you are awaiting citizenship.
- Approval to hold and maintain a Top Secret (positive vet) clearance. The clearance process will involve questions about your: current and past personal relationships and living circumstances, personal values, financial situation, physical and mental health history and civil record. It is in your own interest to be honest and accurate in disclosing details about yourself. If you feel uncomfortable about disclosing this information, you should reconsider your application.
- Personal information provided to ASIO during the course of an employment application is treated in the strictest confidence and is used for employment purposes only.
- Relocation to Canberra. The majority of roles are located in Canberra. However, some are located in other capital cities. The specific vacancy advertisement will indicate the location of the role. Relocation assistance is provided if you are required to move to Canberra.
- Specific requirements. These will be specified on the advertisement of the vacancy you intend applying. These may be, for example: drivers’ licence, undergraduate degree or specific experience.
- Discretion. You are expected to exercise discretion during the recruitment process and throughout your career.
