Eligibility to join ASIO

Australian citizenship is a prerequisite for ASIO employment.

Employment with ASIO requires access to national security classified information. To determine suitability for such access, ASIO will need to undertake checking of an applicant's background, identity, personality, financial circumstances and other areas of their life. Applicants are also subject to psychological assessment.

Information provided to ASIO during the course of an applicant's employment is treated in the strictest confidence and is used for security vetting purposes only.

Because of the security checking required, ASIO does take longer than many other employers to complete the recruitment process. The whole process will generally take around four months.
