Since May 2004 the National Threat Assessment Centre (NTAC) has brought together Australian government agencies with a role in monitoring, collating and analysing all threat intelligence available to the Australian Government. The NTAC is located in ASIO's Central Office in Canberra and includes seconded officers from the:
Australians and Australian interests have remained at threat from terrorist attacks since at least 2000. At present, the alert level in Australia is set at medium - a terrorist attack in Australia is feasible and could well occur. The threat of an attack in Australia is likely to be at least at medium for some time. Further attacks against Australian interests abroad also are likely, including in parts of South East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
ASIO issues threat assessments to inform the actions of the police and other agencies involved in planning security arrangements for a range of matters, including Australian and visiting dignitaries, vital infrastructure, diplomatic premises in Australia and for special events such as the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and the APEC meetings. The assessments detail individuals or groups that could threaten people, property or activities and assess the likelihood of threats being realised. The police and other agencies consider this advice in determining and implementing the measures that are needed to prevent harm from occurring.
