About ASIO

Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS)

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) reviews ASIO’s (and other intelligence agencies’) administration and expenditure, and may also conduct inquiries into matters relating to the intelligence agencies. Specifically with regard to ASIO, the PJCIS is also responsible for:

  • reviewing the listing of an organisation as a terrorist organisation under the Criminal Code Act 1995; and
  • reviewing ASIO’s use of questioning and detention powers.

The PJCIS’s comments and recommendations are reported to each House of the Parliament and to the responsible Minister.
